The Challenge
Spire Leicester Hospital Matron and deputy matron were required to attain Level 4 C.Q.C. standard Safeguarding Training. Both had attended level 3 previously and they were experiencing difficulty in accessing this training.
Most Local Authorities had stopped delivering multi agency event training and the cost to deliver this trailing from private training companies was prohibitive for 2 members of staff. Full day training programmes were the same cost if delivered to 2 delegates or a maximum of 20 delegates.
The Athena Solution
Athena suggested two different options:-
Option 1
The Level 4 training could be attended by any other professionals invited by Spire Leicester Hospital. This could include those performing similar roles in other Spire hospital settings or other clinical professionals looking for promotion to the role of matron. This would mean that Spire Leicester could claim back cost of the cost from other delegates making the training more cost efficient.
Option 2
Deliver a remote style Level 4 C.Q.C. standard course to 2 delegates using skype or telephone and other technology. This style would limit the interaction but would be delivered in a shorter time frame and at a lower cost.
The Spire Leicester Hospital Training co-ordinator, Heather Harding, was able to canvass and identify sufficient numbers of staff from within its own organisation (Spire Healthcare) who required or desired the Level 4 C.Q.C. training and the cost per head (delegate) for training delivery was more attractive by commissioning option 1.
The Outcome
Using Spire Leicester Hospital Safeguarding Policy and Procedures as a golden thread Athena then developed and designed a creative and exciting bespoke Level 4 C.Q.C. standard training course. Using our creative and visual exercises, quizzes, and relevant case studies we were able to test the knowledge and understanding of the delegates.
Athena provided a supporting Handout, course evaluation and Attainment Certificate.
Athena provided a summary of feedback from all the evaluation completed by delegates,
The course had been so well received that those attending returned to their respective hospital sites and recommended the course to other colleagues.
A second course was than commissioned and delivered.
The Training Co-ordinator, Heather Harding, said,
” The Athena Programme has provided an excellent bespoke interactive Level 4 safeguarding training session for over 60 members of staff.
Spire Leicester Hospital alone now has 6 managers trained to Level 4 which ensures a Gold standard of knowledge and skills to safeguard and protect patients and ensure their best possible care”.
