What should I already know before the DSO Combined course
You should already have a good understanding of both the Child and Adult abuse processes under Working Together to safeguard Children (2023) and the Care Act 2014.
What does DSO Training involve?
In this course you will explore the strategic elements of the role and fully understand the impact of safeguarding on everyone concerned.
You will look at multi agency working and the importance of information sharing as a DSL. You will consider risk management and how to manage the most difficult cases that may involve allegations against staff.
What will I Learn on a Safeguarding Officer Combined Course
You will learn and be confident to:
Describe the key legislation and guidance that determines your organisation’s policy for child /adult safeguarding i.e., Ofsted, CQC, IPCC, Charity Commission etc.
- To understand the purpose and importance of the Designated Safeguarding Officer/Lead
- Explore the emotional impact from the disclosure of abuse
- Explore the role and responsibility of the DSO and of other Safeguarding partners.
- Understand how to respond to those subject of concerns or allegations of abuse (HR, LADO, DBS) and to explore the difficult decisions to be made and the people they need to be made with
- How to manage and support staff through the process of allegations/and or disclosures.
- Understand and explore in-depth your organisations safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Understand how your own values and beliefs can affect your role and responsibilities as a DSO.
- Identify and understand the barriers to reporting and effective information sharing.
- Understand the duty to cooperate in multi-agency partnership working.
- Understand and commit to a safer culture and a risk management culture i.e., Audits, Q&A of safeguarding concerns SCR’s and SAR’s duty to co-operate
- Keep up to date with changes in legislation and guidance around safeguarding – i.e., email alerts
- Effect and impact of on practice due to the Covid-19 pandemic on Safeguarding.

What are the responsibilities of a DSO
Typically, DSOs hold positions of seniority within an organisation's leadership team.
In general, a DSO's responsibilities include, but aren't limited to:
- Undergoing DSL training and refreshing knowledge when needed.
- Ensuring their organisation has a compliant safeguarding policy that staff members are aware of and familiar with.
- Coordinating safeguarding responses.
- Managing Safeguarding allegations against staff and volunteers
- Annually reviewing and updating policies when necessary.
- Keeping detailed records.
- Feed into Organisational safeguarding quality and review processes
